Our community
Castra Praetoria is the Schlaraffen chapter in Pretoria — and one of only three in southern Africa. We are here for German-speaking men in Pretoria, Centurion, Midrand and the wider area, and equally for guests who are in Gauteng for work or passing through.
A German-speaking circle with a game of its own
South Africa has no shortage of German-speaking associations — shooting clubs, choirs, school societies, regulars' tables. We are none of these. At the centre of our evenings is a game: a role play in medieval dress in which profession, title and everyday life stay outside, and humour, art and friendship set the tone.
It sounds unusual at first and is, after one evening, remarkably clear. Three minutes of contribution are enough — a poem, a song, an anecdote. Anyone who would rather just listen is equally welcome.
Meeting new people — without obligation
Anyone new to Pretoria knows the question: where do you find company that goes beyond small talk? An evening at one of our meetings is the simplest answer. You come as a guest, sit at the table and decide afterwards at your leisure. A visit costs nothing and commits you to nothing.
Many of our members once arrived in this country without knowing a soul. And if you bring friends who speak no German: there is a reason this website also exists in Afrikaans and English.
Free time in Pretoria — with something for the mind
Between braai, golf and game reserve, some people miss what occupies the mind and is still a pleasure. That is exactly what our evenings offer: talks, music, verbal duels and tournaments in which chains and honour are at stake — never money.
We meet twice a month, on Tuesdays at 7 p.m., at our Burg in Ashlea Gardens. Our season runs from August to June.
Did you know?
Reych is the Schlaraffen term for the local chapter — each has its own name, coat of arms and history. Ours bears diamonds, the ox wagon and the springbok: South Africa as a chapter writes it onto its shield. Our gatherings are called Sippungen, our meeting place is the Burg, and a visit to another chapter is an Einritt.
Come and see us
A single evening is usually enough to understand why Schlaraffen stay loyal to their chapter for decades. Write to us — we will tell you when the next suitable evening is.
